What is a Personal PAN?
A Personal PAN (Permanent Account Number) is a unique 9-digit identification number issued by the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) of Nepal. It is mandatory for individuals who earn taxable income, either from employment, business, or freelance/professional work.
Who Needs a Personal PAN?
You are required to obtain a Personal PAN if you:
- Are a salaried employee in a registered organization.
- Are self-employed (e.g., doctor, lawyer, IT freelancer, artist, consultant).
- Are involved in any form of business or trade as an individual.
- Need to file income tax returns.
- Want to participate in government or formal contracts.
How to Get a Personal PAN?
Option A: IRD Taxpayer Portal (via web browser)
- Visit site: ird.gov.np → click Taxpayer Portal → “Registration (PAN, VAT, Excise)” → “Application for Registration.”
- Fill in your details (username, password, phone, email) and tick Personal PAN. Choose your nearest verifying office (e.g., IRO or TSO) and click OK, then Continue.
- Complete the e-form: personal info (Nepali & English), date of birth, gender, citizenship details, photo, income source, address, etc.
- Upload scanned document(s): citizenship certificate and passport‑sized photo.
- Submit the form, note the Submission Number, then Print the application form.
- Visit your chosen IRD office with the printed form and your original citizenship card (and photocopy). The PAN is issued free of charge, and the physical card is typically given on the spot or within a few hours.
Option B: Nagarik App
Download/open the Nagarik App, which now supports PAN registration.
- Use the app to apply and get your PAN instantaneously—as fast as under 10 minutes!
- After obtaining the number electronically via the app, visit your IRD office to get a physical PAN card, which usually takes 5–10 minutes.
